Atypical and Awesome “Easy as Biscuits”
We have a local celebrity about an hour from here. She is an elderly grandmother (retired school teacher) who has become an internet sensation by posting videos of her cooking old-school “country” food and giving step-by-step instructions of how to recreate her recipes in your own kitchen. Bless her, look up Ms. Brenda Gannt - you’ll be glad you did.
However. Those biscuits, They have become my dragon to slay. I tried to make homemade buttermilk biscuits years ago- very early in my first marriage and they were so bad I resolved to buy store-bought frozen from there on. Yet, Ms. Brenda lit a fire in me and I have become determined to master the art of making homemade buttermilk biscuits.
My first attempt (about a week ago) was disastrous. In all fairness, I did not use Ms Brenda’s recipe and I used ingredients I had on hand. For those taking notes, all purpose flour and self-rising flour are not interchangeable in baking. However, if anyone needs disc golf discs, I’ve got you covered.
Attempts number two and three were this morning. I had better ingredients and attempt two “looked” better. However, I handled the dough too much and they were tough. I was sad. But then, I had a burst of determination and tried one more time. This time, I handled them less and baked them in my cast iron skillet. They were better but my skillet is small and I overcrowded it. Alas, I will try again another day. It has encouraged my kids to try their hands at it so that is a good side benefit.
In life, most of my journeys have been filled with missteps and wrong turns. But I do eventually get there- wherever that may be. And I will learn to make Ms Brenda’s biscuits. Stay tuned.
Attempt 1- hockey pucks
Attempt 2- better but tough- handled them way too much!
Attempt 3- best try, yet but overcrowded my skillet
