Atypical & Awesome “Rodeo Rockstar”
So, Phillip and I went to our first rodeo dance last night. We travelled 35 miles to Bonifay, FL abd it took us 2 hours to find the place where the dance was located. I was so upset! We missed seeing Alice (Nelson) and she had played a couple of our songs we’ve cowritten including a brand new cowboy song we wrote for the occasion. Alice immediately runs up to me and hugs me and then we scoot off to the hospitality tent to live like rock stars. (Reality- she tuned her guitar, we took a selfie, and then left lol) Her family graciously allows Phillip and I to sit at their table and we enjoy watching the Frank Fletcher Band. Frank even did a song he cowrite with Ben Byrd, Wesley Brown, and my good buddy Dennis Powell, “Midnight Makes Me Crazy”, i proudly represent Dennis through Atypical Music Publishing and Services (A.M.P.S.).
The rest of the table leaves to hit the dance floor and it is just Phillip and me. During one point, a literal drunk NUTCASE (an older woman three sheets to the wind) comes to our table saying I have her phone. She picks up all the phones on the table including mine and I had to grab my phone out of her hand. She starts stroking my hair and tying to get my phone. Phillip tells me to show her my screensaver (a pic of Phillip and me) to prove to her it is my phone. Even seeing a picture of ME on MY phone does not convince her. I went and got security as I did not want that lady to continue to be a problem or to touch me. Seriously, don’t touch me. Ever.
So after that fiasco, we continue to enjoy the evening. The Frank Ray band was stellar. Like, for real- I was seriously impressed. Frank had spoken with Alice earlier in the evening and commended her on her writing. We have a door open there for future collabs.
Phillip waa so sweet and hung in there as we waited for Alice to take the stage again backed by the Frank Fletcher band. He danced with me to “Tennessee Whiskey” although I am completely sick of the song it felt right to dance with my honey (who, btw looked exceptionally cute last night) under horeshoe strobes at a rodeo dance in Bonifay. i mean, i was wearing boots and everything.
As we are waiting and getting a little tired, Alice gets the mix of “Girlfriend” via email. Finally! We try to listen but it is near impossible there but hey, it has finally arrived. Alice takes the stage a sings a few songs with the Frank Fletcher band and even does a duet with Mr. Frank Fletcher himself. Even though it is 2 am, she rocks the stage and there is no doubt the stage is her happy place. Phillip and I get home close to 3 am for the first time in years (at least for me- Phillip had standard 2 am closings during his restaurant days). I return music messages and listen to the song, finally. I drink a glass of milk, eat a cookie, and go to bed. I have to work today, this rock star rodeo (ish) queen is done. Oh, and this is my phone.
