Blue Plate Blog Episode 3

Entrée: May 1st- one of my favorite days of the year. I absolutely love May Day. I’m not exactly sure why. Maybe because I love spring, the idea of May poles, and flowers, and femininity (I am SUCH a girl!). Growing up in south Alabama, May Day was never a celebrated event. However, deep in my heart I have always had a fondness for dainty European customs- tea parties, pretty stationary; tussie mussies- you get the idea.  May also reminds me of my grandmother as her birthday would have been May 4. You’ll hear a lot about my grandmother if you “lunch” with me on the regular. Then, there’s Mother’s Day. One of the most special days out of the year for me. And now, I have even one more reason to love May- my husband and I will celebrate our 4th wedding anniversary next week. I typically celebrate May Day by having strawberry cake and this year I have something special planned which I’ll tell you about in a bit.

First side: Flowers. While we are on the subject, when Hurricane Katrina hit, we were living in Tallahassee, Florida. I remember being so confused and lost about what was going on in New Orleans. I had no idea what to do. So, I went into Walmart and bought a ton of cheap, cut flowers and walked around the parking lot and left flowers on the windshields of cars. Because- I just did not know what to do or how to help and wanted to provide some small comfort to as many people as I could. I’m sure I probably confused a lot of people that day! If you get a chance, give a random person flowers today- go on see what happens- it’s a May Day tradition.

Second side: Let’s talk about that strawberry cake. I have one ordered from a local bakery to pick up after work and I cannot wait. There’s no way my family will eat the whole cake so I plan to share it with my mother and sister. But want to talk about an emotionally charged food? Strawberry cake. Nothing reminds me more of my daughter. Takes me back to her being five years old playing with her Strawberry Shortcake dolls. Which of course, reminded me of my own childhood memories of playing with mine. I can still smell those dolls. Food is a such an emotionally charged time capsule for me and I am so looking forward to this cake!

Dessert: Well, we made it to Friday. As the world opens back up, get out and take in some sunshine. Life is short- soak it up! If you are still stuck inside, enjoy some live streams from your favorite musicians, I have loved being able to watch some of my favorites from the comfort of my bed. Friday’s are for listening to 80’s music for me- it truly reminds me of some of the best times of my life- the Cure, Tina Turner, Lionel Richie- they all take me back to popcorn Friday’s circa 1984. But that’s another blog.

Until Monday, have a great weekend- order’s up!
