Atypical & Awesome “Funny”

Life is a funny gig and people are funny. So much I’d like to blog about this morning but let me start with expectations. I see a lot of posts on social media about people not being supported (musicians, comics, etc) by friends and family and the let-down a performer feels when they have low turn-outs to show. You have got to lower your expectations. As much as it stings- no one owes you anything. I have been doing this for 18 years. My family (with the exception of Phillip) does not attend my shows and does not support me on social media. This isn’t a jab- it is true. And it is FINE. They love and support me in other ways. My friends occasionally support me. They will say they are “so proud” of me and I’m “an inspiration” but they don’t come to shows either- and it’s fine. What they do is refer people TO me which can be very helpful. THAT is support.

For the most part, I perform for strangers and that is a cool thing, too. New friends, right? I hold zero expectations. I continue to work and try to hone my craft and keep on keeping on. I would advise other artists to do the same. Be in competition with the yesterday you. And here’s a thought-support others occasionally.

Speaking of yesterday, Phillip and I participated in another comedy open-mic. This time at The Social on Main in Enterprise. Cam Stephens has worked hard to get this going. We had six performers last night.it is always so cool to see someone bite the bullet and give it a shot for the first time. We are all working to improve our sets and delivery and the growth is showing. Cam hosts this event the second Monday of the month. Come out and try out the mic!
